5 Reasons Divorce Lawyers Say Get Rid of Your Joint Account

Posted On: September 18, 2023

High on the list of reasons couples divorce is financial conflict and deep financial stress.

One way to avoid this is to do things that avoid arguments over money, one of which would be not to have a shared checking and/or savings account.  Many people have joint account to avoid an estate process or access to funds if a spouse disappears, is incapacitated or God forbid dies.  However, managing money together can often cause stress, especially if the spending habits of one wreaks havoc for the other.

Further, many couples do not have frank, open conversations about finances, estate planning or even just how they view and feel about money.  You would be surprised the differences people have in their relationship with/to money.  Again, having open, honest communication early on is helpful.

More Baby Boomers Are Living Alone. One Reason Why: ‘Gray Divorce’

Posted On: September 11, 2023

38 million adults live alone in the United States.  The number of single person households has reached a record high according to census data.  Experts say that this part of the population is likely to climb dramatically in coming decades.  More older Americans are living alone and that is expected to increase as Baby Boomers age.

One of the major factors found for seniors living alone appears to be a trend from rising divorce rates among adults over 50.  The “gray divorce” has become much more prominent where it now represents a third of all people getting divorced.

Even though divorce rates for the overall population are declining, gray divorces are increasing.  The important thing is to go through this process in a much more holistic approach.  If you find yourself in this situation, consider Mediation or Collaborate Divorce.

10 Essential Pieces Of Marriage Advice Therapists Always Give Their Clients

Posted On: September 05, 2023

This is the relationship advice therapists want couples to keep top of mind.  Although every couple and their circumstances are different, it appears that there is some common universal marriage advice given by therapists.

Avoiding conflict often creates further conflict down the road.  So, don't be afraid to face conflict and explore it...it will be much more productive.  It's also important to stay curious and ask questions.  In other words, be interested in your partner’s life...what is important to them and what is going on in their lives?

One of the points is very interesting.  Therapists seem to believe that all arguments that we may have with one another boil down to one essential element:  basically wanting or needing to be sure that our partner will be there for us.  What needs are we really expressing through these conflicts and arguments?  Discovering that can ultimately bring a more intimate and binding connection.
